CHAPTER 16

Pharisees/Sadducees Demand a Sign

Parallel:  Mark 8:11,12; Luke 12:54-56

Matt. 16:1 The Pharisees and the Sadducees came, and 1testing Him desired that He would show them a sign from heaven.

1Luke 11:16 And others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven.

Matt. 16:2 He 1answered and said to them, ÓWhen it is evening, you say, ÕIt will be fair weather, for the sky is red.Õ

1Mark 8:12 And He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, ÓWhy does this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say to you, there will no sign be given to this generation.Ó

Matt. 16:3 And in the morning, ÕIt will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and lowering.Õ O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times?

Matt. 16:4 A 1wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet 2Jonah.Ó  And He left them and departed.

1Jeremiah 3:14  ÓReturn, O backsliding children,Ó says the LORD; Ófor I am married to you. I will take you, one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

2Matthew 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Beware of Hypocrisy

Parallel:  Mark 8:13-21; Luke 12:1-3

Matt. 16:5 And when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take 1bread.

1Mark 8:14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and in the boat they did not have with them more than one loaf.

Matt. 16:6 Then Jesus said to them, ÓTake heed and beware of the 1leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.Ó

1Mark 8:15 And He charged them, saying, ÓTake heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of Herod.Ó

Matt. 16:7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ÓIt is because we have taken no bread.Ó

Matt. 16:8  But when Jesus perceived, He said to them, ÓO you of 1little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?

1Matthew 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, will He not much more clothe you? O you of little faith?

1Matthew 8:26 And He said to them, ÓWhy are you fearful, O you of little faith?Ó Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

1Matthew 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him, and said to him, ÓO you of little faith, why did you doubt?Ó

Matt. 16:9 Do you not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many 1baskets you took up?

1Matthew 14:20 And they all ate, and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments.

Matt. 16:10 Neither the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many 1baskets you took up?

1Matthew 15:37 And they all ate and were filled, and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

1Mark 8:8 So they did ate, and were filled, and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

Matt. 16:11 How is it that you do not understand that I spoke not to you concerning bread, but that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?Ó

Matt. 16:12 Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

PeterÕs Confession of Jesus The Christ

Parallel:  Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-20

Matt. 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples saying, 1ÓWho do men say that I the Son of Man am?Ó

1Mark 8:27 And Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, saying to them, ÓWho do men say that I am?Ó

1Luke 9:18 And it came to pass, as He was alone praying His disciples were with Him, and He asked them, saying, ÓWho do the people say that I am?Ó

Matt. 16:14 And they said, ÓSome say that You are 1John the Baptist, some 2Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.Ó

1Matthew 14:1,2 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said to his servants, ÓThis is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works show forth themselves in him.Ó

1Matthew 3:1,2 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, ÓRepent you: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.Ó

2Mark 6:15 Others said, ÓIt is Elijah.Ó And others said, ÓHe is a prophet, like one of the prophets.Ó

Matt. 16:15 He said to them, ÓBut who do you say that I am?Ó

Matt. 16:16 And 1Simon Peter answered and said, ÓYou are the 2Christ, the Son of the living God.Ó

1John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, ÓYou are Simon the son of Jonah. You will be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.Ó

21 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Matt. 16:17 And Jesus answered and said to him, ÓBlessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,  for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but My 1Father who is in heaven.

1Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, ÓThis is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Ó

1Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, ÓThis is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear you Him!Ó

Matt. 16:18 And I say also to you, that you are 1Peter, and upon this rock I will build My 2church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

1John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, ÓYou are Simon the son of Jonah. You will be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.Ó

2Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Matt. 16:19 And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you 1bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.Ó

1Acts 1:8 But you will receive power, when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.

1Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

1Acts 10:34,35 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, ÓOf a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons. But in every nation he who fears Him, and works righteousness, is accepted by Him.Ó

1Acts 10:44,45 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also.

Matt. 16:20 Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.Ó

Death and Resurrection Predicted

Parallel:  Mark 8:31-33; Luke 9:21,22

Matt. 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to show to His 1disciples, how that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be 2killed, and be 3raised again the third day.

1John 2:19-22 Jesus answered and said to them, ÓDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.Ó Then said the Jews, ÓIt required forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?Ó But He spoke of the temple of His body. When therefore He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had spoken.

2John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

3Matthew 12:38-40 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, ÓMaster, we would see a sign from You.Ó But He answered and said to them, ÓAn evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.Ó

Matt. 16:22 Then Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him, saying, ÓBe it far from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!Ó

Matt. 16:23 But He turned, and said to 1Peter, ÓGet you behind Me, Satan!  You are an offence to Me, for you think not the things that are of God, but those that are of men.Ó

1Mark 8:33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, ÓGet behind Me, Satan. For you know not the things of God, but the things of men.Ó

1Matthew 4:10 Then said Jesus to him, ÓGet yourself away from Me, Satan: for it is written, ÕYou shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.ÕÓ

Take Up Cross/Follow Jesus

Parallel:  Mark 8:34-38; 9:1; Luke 9:23-27; John 12:25,26

Matt. 16:24 Then said Jesus to His disciples, ÓIf any one will 1come after Me, let him 2deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

1Luke 9:23 And He said to them all, ÓIf anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.Ó

11 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

2Hebrews 11:37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—

Matt. 16:25 For whoever will 1save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for My sake will find it.

1John 12:25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

1Mark 8:35 For whoever will save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for My sake and the gospelÕs, will save it.

Matt. 16:26 For what is a man 1profited, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his 2soul?

1Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gains the whole world, and loses or casts away himself?

2Luke 12:20,21 But God said to him, ÓYou fool, this night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be, which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.Ó

Matt. 16:27   For the Son of Man will 1come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He will 2reward every man according to his works.

1Matthew 25:31-33 When the Son of Man will come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then will He sit on the throne of His glory. And before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And he will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

12 Thessalonians 1:7,8 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed to men to die once, but after this the judgment;

22 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

Matt. 16:28 Verily I say to you, there are some standing here, who will not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in His 1kingdom.

1Acts 20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He has purchased with His own blood.

CHAPTER 17

The Transfiguration

Parallel:  Mark 9:2-13; Luke 9:28-36

Matt. 17:1 And after six days Jesus took 1Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart,

1Luke 9:28 And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, He took Peter, John, and James, and went upon a mountain to pray.

1Mark 14:33 And He took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly distressed, and to be very heavy.

Matt. 17:2 and was transfigured before them. And His face shone like the sun, and his 1clothing was white as the 2light.

1Luke 9:29 And as he prayed, the appearance of His countenance was altered, and his clothing was white and gleaming.

1Mark 9:3 And his clothing became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can whiten them.

2John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

22 Peter 1:16,17 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the Excellent Glory, ÓThis is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Ó

Matt. 17:3   And, behold, there 1appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with Him.

1Luke 9:31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke of His decease which He would accomplish at Jerusalem.

Matt. 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said to Jesus, 1ÓLord, it is good for us to be here; if You will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for You and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

1Luke 9:32,33 But Peter and those who were with Him were heavy with sleep; and when they were awake, they saw His glory, and the two men who stood with Him. And it came to pass, as they departed from Him, Peter said to Jesus, ÓMaster, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for ElijahÓ— not knowing what he said.

1Mark 9:6 For he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

Matt. 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, 1a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, 2ÓThis is My beloved 3Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear you Him!Ó

1Luke 9:34 While he thus spoke, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them; and they feared as they entered the cloud.

2Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, ÓThis is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Ó

3Hebrews 1:1,2 God, who at various times and in different manners spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds;

Matt. 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were greatly afraid.

Matt. 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, ÓArise, and 1be not afraid.Ó

1Matthew 14:27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ÓBe of good cheer! It is I; be not afraid.Ó

Matt. 17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they 1saw no man, except 2Jesus only.

1Luke 9:36 And when the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

2Luke 9:8 And by some, that Elijah had appeared, and by others, that one of the old prophets had risen again.

Matt. 17:9 And as they came down from the 1mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, ÓTell the vision  to no one, until the Son of Man is 2risen from the dead.Ó

1Luke 9:37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they had come down from the hill, much people met Him.

2Mark 9:10 And they kept this saying to themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead meant.

Matt. 17:10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, ÓWhy then do the scribes say that 1Elijah must come first?Ó

1Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He shall come, says the LORD of hosts.

1Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

Matt. 17:11 And Jesus answered and said to them, ÓElijah is truly coming, and will 1restore all things,

1Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, ÓWe have Abraham to our father,Ó for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

Matt. 17:12 But I say to you, that 1Elijah has come already, and they knew him not, but have done to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man will also suffer of them.

1Matthew 14:1-12 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said to his servants, ÓThis is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works show forth themselves in him.Ó For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for HerodiasÕ sake, his brother PhilipÕs wife. For John said to him, ÓIt is not lawful for you to have her.Ó And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when HerodÕs birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, ÓGive me John the BaptistÕs head in a charger.Ó And the king was sorry; nevertheless for the oath made, and those who sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given to her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Matt. 17:13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy

Parallel:  Mark 9:14-29; Luke 9:37-42

Matt. 17:14 And when they had come to the multitude, there came to Him a 1certain man, kneeling down to Him, and saying,

1Matthew 9:14,15 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, ÓWhy do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples fast not?Ó And Jesus said to them, ÓCan the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then will they fast.

1Luke 9:38 And, behold, a man of the crowd cried out, saying, ÓMaster, I beg You, look at my son, for he is my only child.

Matt. 17:15  ÓLord, have mercy on my son, for he is a 1lunatic, and suffers greatly.  For he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.

1Luke 9:39 And, behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and it tears him until he foams at the mouth, and bruises him, it hardly ever departs from him.

1Mark 9:18 And wherever he seizes him, he tears him, he foams at the mouth, and gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. And I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast him out, and they could not.Ó

Matt. 17:16 And I brought him to Your disciples, and 1they could not cure him.Ó

Mark 9:21  And He asked his father, ÓHow long has this been happening to him?Ó And he said, ÓFrom a child.Ó

Matt. 17:17 Then Jesus answered and said, ÓO 1faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him here to Me.Ó

1Mark 9:23,24 Jesus said to him, ÓIf You can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.Ó And immediately the father of the child cried out, and with tears said, ÓLord, I believe; help my unbelief.Ó

Matt. 17:18 And Jesus 1rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour.

1Mark 9:25,26 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, ÓYou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him.Ó And the spirit cried out, and convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead so that many said, ÓHe is dead.Ó

Matt. 17:19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, ÓWhy could we not cast him out?Ó

Matt. 17:20 And Jesus said to them, ÓBecause of your unbelief; for verily I say to you, if  you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to yonder place, and it will remove; and nothing will be impossible to you.

Matt. 17:21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.Ó

Death/Resurrection Predicted Again

Parallel:  Mark 9:30-32; Luke 9:43-45

Matt. 17:22 And while they stayed in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ÓThe Son of Man will be 1betrayed into the hands of men,

1Matthew 26:14-16 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, and said to them, ÓWhat will you give me, if I deliver Him to you?Ó And they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

1Zechariah 11:12 And I said to them, ÓIf you think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear.Ó So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.

Matt. 17:23 and they will 1kill Him, and the third day He will be raised again.Ó And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

1Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to show to His disciples, how that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Jesus and Peter Pay Taxes

Parallel:  None

Matt. 17:24 And when they had come to 1Capernaum, those who received tribute money came to Peter, and said, ÓDoes not your master 2pay tribute?Ó

1Matthew 8:5 And when Jesus had entered into Capernaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching Him,

2Exodus 30:12 When you take the sum of the children of Israel for their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them.

22 Chronicles 24:5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, ÓGo out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you do it quickly.Ó However the Levites did not do it quickly.

Matt. 17:25 He said, ÓYes.Ó And when he had come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, ÓWhat do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or tribute? From their own children, or from strangers?Ó

Matt. 17:26 Peter said to Him, ÓOf strangers.Ó Jesus said to him, ÓThen the children are free.

Matt. 17:27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go to the sea, and cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and 1give it to them for Me and you.Ó

1Luke 20:25  And He said to them, ÓRender therefore to Caesar the things that are CaesarÕs, and to God the things that are GodÕs.Ó

Disciples Argue About Greatness

Parallel:  Mark 9:33-37

Compare: Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45; Luke 22:24-30

Matt. 18:1 At the same time came the disciples to Jesus, saying, ÓWho is the 1greatest in the kingdom of heaven?Ó

1Mark 9:33-35 And He came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house He asked them, ÓWhat were you disputing among yourselves on the way?Ó But they held their peace; for on the way they had disputed among themselves who was the greatest. And He sat down, and called the twelve, and said to them, ÓIf anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.Ó

Matt. 18:2 And Jesus called a 1little child to Him,  and set him in the midst of them,

1Mark 9:36,37 And He took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, ÓWhoever receives one such child in My name, receives Me, and whoever receives Me, receives not Me, but Him who sent Me.Ó

Matt. 18:3 And said, Verily I say to you, except you be converted, and become as little children, you will not enter the 1kingdom of heaven.

1Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

1Luke 22:24-30 And there was also a strife among them, as to which of them should be regarded the greatest. And He said to them, ÓThe kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called Benefactors. But not so with you; but he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who is chief, as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is not he who sits at the table? But I am among you as He who serves. You are those who have continued with Me in My trials. And I appoint to you a kingdom, as My Father has appointed to Me, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.Ó

Matt. 18:4 Whoever therefore will 1humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

11 Peter 5:5,6 Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ÓGod resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.Ó Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,

Matt. 18:5 And whoever 1receives one little child in My name, receives Me.

1Mark 9:37 Whoever receives one such child in My name, receives Me, and whoever receives Me, receives not Me, but Him who sent Me.

Offenses Will Come

Parallel:  Mark 9:42-48; Luke 17:1-4

Matt. 18:6 But whoever will offend one of these 1little ones who believe in Me, it would be better for him that a millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depths of the sea.

11 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, that you do not sin . And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

11 John 2:12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His nameÕs sake.

11 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time; and as you have heard that Antichrist is coming, even now there are many antichrists; by which we know that it is the last time.

11 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

Matt. 18:7 Woe to the world because of offences! For it must be that offences come, but woe to that man by whom the offence comes!

Matt. 18:8 Therefore if your 1hand or your foot offend you, cut them off, and cast them from you: it is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

1Mark 9:43 And if your hand offend you, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than having two hands to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—

Matt. 18:9 And if your 1eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into 2hell.

11 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

2Mark 9:44 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Parable of the Lost Sheep

Parallel:  Luke 15:1-7

Matt. 18:10 Take heed that you despise not one of these 1little ones, for I say to you, that in heaven their 2angels do always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven.

11 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

2Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for those who will be heirs of salvation?

2Acts 27:23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, to whose I belong and whom I serve,

Matt. 18:11 For the Son of Man has come to 1save that which was 2lost.

1Luke 15:1,2 Then all the publicans and sinners  drew near to Him to hear Him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, ÓThis Man receives sinners, and eats with them.Ó

1Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

2Acts 8:20-24 But Peter said to him, ÓYour money perish with you, because you have thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I perceive that you are in the gall of bitterness, and in the bondage of iniquity.Ó Then Simon answered and said, ÓPray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken come upon me.Ó

Matt. 18:12 What do you think? 1If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine, and goes into the mountains, and seeks that which has gone astray?

1Luke 15:3,4 And He spoke this parable to them, saying, ÓWhat man among you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he finds it?Ó

Matt. 18:13 And if he should 1find it, verily I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep, than over the ninety-nine that went not astray.

1Luke 15:5,6 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ÓRejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.Ó

Matt. 18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these 1little ones should perish.

11 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

A Brother Who Sins

Parallel:  Luke 17:3,4

Matt. 18:15 Moreover if your brother 1trespasses  against you, go and tell him his fault  between you and him alone. If he will hear you, you have 2gained your brother.

Luke 17:3,4 Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turns again to you, saying, ÓI repent,Ó you shall forgive him.

1Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in a fault, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness, considering yourself, lest you also be tempted.

2James 5:19,20 Brethren, if any of you strays from the truth, and one converts him, let him know, that he who converts the sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death, and will hide a multitude of sins.

Matt. 18:16 But if he will not hear you, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three 1witnesses every word may be established.

1Deuteronomy 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses,  shall the matter be established.

12 Corinthians 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. ÓIn the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.Ó

Matt. 18:17 And if he will neglect to hear them, tell it to the 1church, but if he neglects to hear the church, let him be to you as a 2heathen man and a publican.

1Matthew 16:18 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

2Ephesians 2:11,12 Therefore remember, that in time past you were Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by who is called the Circumcision, made in the flesh by hands—that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

2Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark those who cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned, and avoid them.

21 Corinthians 5:9-11 I wrote to you in an epistle not to keep company with fornicators. Yet I did not mean at all with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters, for then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company, if anyone who is called a brother, who is a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—with such a one not even to eat.

22 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received from us.

22 Thessalonians 3:14 And if anyone does not obey our word by this epistle, note that man and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

22 John 1:10 If anyone comes to you, and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house, nor bid him God speed;

Matt. 18:18 Verily I say to you, whatever you will 1bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you will loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

1Acts 1:8 But you will receive power, when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.

1Matthew 16:19 And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Matt. 18:19 Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth as touching anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.

Matt. 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am in the midst of them.Ó

Parable of Unforgiving Steward

Parallel:  None

Matt. 18:21 Then came Peter to Him, and said, ÓLord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?Ó

Matt. 18:22 Jesus said to him, ÓI do not say to you until 1seven times, but, until seventy times seven.Ó

1Luke 17:4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turns again to you, saying, ÓI repent,Ó you shall forgive him.

Matt. 18:23 Therefore the 1kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

1Matthew 16:18 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

Matt. 18:24 And when he had begun settlement, one was brought to him, who owed him ten thousand talents.

Matt. 18:25 But since he was not able to pay, his lord commanded that he and his wife and children, and all that he had be sold, and that payment be made.

Matt. 18:26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshiped him, saying, ÓLord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.Ó

Matt. 18:27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

Matt. 18:28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him a hundred pence, and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, ÓPay me what you owe!Ó

Matt. 18:29 And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, ÓHave patience with me, and I will pay you all.Ó

Matt. 18:30 And he would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay the debt.

Matt. 18:31 So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told their lord all that had been done.

Matt. 18:32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said to him, ÓO you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.

Matt. 18:33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you?Ó

Matt. 18:34 And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due to him.

Matt. 18:35 So likewise will My heavenly Father also do to you, if you, from your hearts, do not 1forgive your brotherÕs trespasses.Ó

1Ephesians 4:32 And be you kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for ChristÕs sake has forgiven you.

CHAPTER 19

Jesus Teaches On Marriage And Divorce

Parallel:  Mark 10:1-12; Luke 16:18

Matt. 19:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea beyond Jordan.

Matt. 19:2 And great 1multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.

1Mark 10:1 And He arose from there, and went to the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan, and the people gathered to Him again, and, as He was accustomed, He taught them again.

Matt. 19:3 The Pharisees also came to Him, tempting Him, and saying to Him, ÓIs it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?Ó

Matt. 19:4 And He answered and said to them, ÓHave you not 1read, that He who made them at the 2beginning made them male and female,

1Mark 10:3 And He answered and said to them, ÓWhat did Moses command you?Ó

2Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cling to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.

Matt. 19:5 and said, for this cause a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh?

Matt. 19:6 Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.Ó

Matt. 19:7 They say to Him, ÓWhy did 1Moses then command to give a writing of 2divorcement, and to put her away?Ó

1Mark 10:4 And they said, ÓMoses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away.Ó

2Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man has taken a wife and married her, and it comes to pass that she find no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts  it in her hand, and sends her out of his house,

Matt. 19:8 He said to them, ÓMoses, because of the 1hardness of your hearts, permitted you to put away your wives, but from the 2beginning it was not so.

1Mark 10:5,6 And Jesus answered and said to them, ÓFor the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God Ómade them male and female.Ó

2Romans 7:1-3 Do you not know brethren, (for I speak to those who know the law), how that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives, but if her husband is dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she is married to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she marries another man.

Matt. 19:9 And I say to you, whoever will 1put away his wife, except it be for 2fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is put away commits 3adultery.Ó

1Mark 10:11,12 And He said to them, ÓWhoever shall put away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery.Ó

1Luke 16:18 Whoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is put away from her husband commits adultery.

2Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

3Exodus 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

Matt. 19:10 His disciples say to Him, ÓIf the case be so of the man with his wife, it is not good to marry.Ó

What About Celibacy?

Parallel:  None

Matt. 19:11 But He said to them, ÓAll men cannot receive this saying, except those to whom it is given.

Matt. 19:12 For there are some eunuchs, who were so born from their motherÕs womb, and there are some eunuchs, who were made eunuchs by men, and there be eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heavenÕs sake. 1He who is able to receive it, let him receive it.Ó

11 Corinthians 7:6,7 But I speak this by permission, and not as a commandment. For I would that all men were even as I myself. But each man has his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

11 Corinthians 7:32,33 But I would have you without concern. He who is unmarried cares for the things that belong to the Lord—how he may please the Lord, but he who is married cares for the things that are of the world—how he may please his wife.

Little Children Blessed

Parallel:  Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17

Matt. 19:13 Then 1little children were brought to Him, that He might put His hands on them, and pray, and the disciples rebuked them.

1Mark 10:13 And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those who brought them.

1Luke 18:15 And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them; and His disciples rebuked those who brought them.

Matt. 19:14 But Jesus said, ÓAllow 1little children to come to Me, and forbid them not, for of such  is the kingdom of heaven.Ó

1Mark 10:14-16 But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said to them, ÓLet the little children to come to Me, and do not hinder them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child, shall not enter it.Ó  And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.

Matt. 19:15 And He laid His hands on them, and departed from there.

Rich Young Ruler

Parallel:  Mark 10:17-22; Luke 18:18-23

Matt. 19:16 And, behold, 1one came and said to Him, ÓGood Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?Ó

1Mark 10:17 And when He was going out into the way, there came one running, and knelt before Him, and asked Him, ÓGood Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?Ó

1Luke 18:18 And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, ÓGood Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?Ó

Matt. 19:17 And He said to Him, ÓWhy do you call Me good? There is none good except one, that is, God but if you will enter into life, keep the commandments.Ó

Matt. 19:18 He said to Him, ÓWhich?Ó Jesus said, ÓYou shall do no murder,Ó ÓYou shall not commit 1adultery,Ó 2ÓYou shall not steal,Ó ÓYou shall not bear false witness,Ó

1Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

1Exodus 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

2Romans 13:8-10 Owe no man anything, except to love one another; for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For this, ÓYou shall not commit adultery,Ó ÓYou shall not kill,Ó ÓYou shall not steal,Ó  ÓYou shall not bear false witness,Ó ÓYou shall not covet;Ó and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, ÓYou shall love your neighbor as yourself.Ó Love works no ill to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

2Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have to give to him who has need.

Matt. 19:19 1Óhonor your father and your mother,Ó and, ÓYou shall 2love your neighbor as yourself.Ó

1Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ÓHonor your father and mother,Ó which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.

2Mark 12:31 And the second, like it is this, ÓYou shall love your neighbor as yourself.Ó  There is no other commandment greater than these.

2James 2:8 If you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ÓYou shall love your neighbor as yourself,Ó you do well;

2Luke 10:29-37 But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, ÓAnd who is my neighbor?Ó And Jesus answered and said, ÓA certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he came to the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ÓTake care of him; and whatever you spend more, when I come again, I will repay you.Ó Now which of these three, do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?Ó And he said, ÓHe who showed mercy on him.Ó Then Jesus said to him, ÓYou go and do likewise.Ó

Matt. 19:20 The young man said to Him, ÓAll these things have I kept from my youth.  What do I still lack?Ó

Matt. 19:21 Jesus said to him, ÓIf you will be 1perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have 2treasure in heaven, and come, follow Me.Ó

1Mark 10:21 Then Jesus looking at him loved him and said to him, ÓOne thing you lack. Go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.Ó

1Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, ÓYou still lack one thing: sell all that you have, and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.Ó

2Matthew 6:19-21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matt. 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away 1sorrowful, for he had 2great possessions.

1Luke 18:23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful; for he was very rich.

1Mark 10:22 At that saying he was sad and went away grieved; for he had great possessions.

21 Timothy 6:9,10 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and some who have coveted after it, have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

God Makes All Things Possible

Parallel:  Mark 10:23-31; Luke 18:24-30

Matt. 19:23 Then said Jesus to His disciples, ÓVerily I say to you, that a rich man will 1hardly enter the kingdom of heaven.

1Mark 10:23 And Jesus looked around, and said to His disciples, ÓHow hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!Ó

1Luke 18:24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, He said, ÓHow hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!Ó

Matt. 19:24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a 1camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a 2rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.Ó

1Luke 18:25  ÓFor it is easier for a camel to go through a needleÕs eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.Ó

2Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again, and said to them, ÓChildren, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!Ó

Matt. 19:25 When His disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, ÓWho then can be saved?Ó

Matt. 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said to them, ÓWith men  this is impossible, but 1with God all things are possible.Ó

1Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for You.

Matt. 19:27 Then answered Peter and said to Him, ÓBehold, we have forsaken all, and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?Ó

Matt. 19:28 And Jesus said to them, ÓVerily I say to you, that you who have 1followed Me, in the 2regeneration when the Son of Man will 3sit on the throne of His glory, 4you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of 5Israel.

1Mark 10:29,30 And Jesus answered and said, ÓVerily I say to you, there is no man who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake, and the gospelÕs, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the world to come, eternal life.Ó

22 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

2Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away. And there was no more sea.

21 Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

21 Corinthians 15:51,52 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

3Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this, which you now see and hear.

3Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, ÓSit on My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool?Ó

3Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man will come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then will He sit on the throne of His glory,

4Acts 1:26 And they cast their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

5Galatians 6:15,16 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.

Matt. 19:29 And everyone who has 1forsaken houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My nameÕs sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit everlasting life.

1Mark 10:29,30 And Jesus answered and said, ÓVerily I say to you, there is no man who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake, and the gospelÕs, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions— and in the world to come, eternal life.

Matt. 19:30 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be 1first.

1Matthew 6:33 But seek you first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things will be added to you.

CHAPTER 20

Parable of Worker in Vineyard

Parallel:  None

Matt. 20:1 For the 1kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

1Matthew 16:18,20 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you will bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you will loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

Matt. 20:2 And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Matt. 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

Matt. 20:4 and said to them, ÓYou also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.Ó And they went their way.

Matt. 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

Matt. 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, ÕWhy do you stand here all the day idle?Õ

Matt. 20:7 They say to him, ÓBecause no man has hired us.Ó  He said to them, ÓYou go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right, that you will receive.Ó

Matt. 20:8 So when evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, ÓCall the laborers, and give them their hire, beginning with the last to the first.Ó

Matt. 20:9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, every man received a penny.

Matt. 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more, and they likewise received every man a penny.

Matt. 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,

Matt. 20:12 saying, ÓThese last have labored only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and heat of the day.Ó

Matt. 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, ÓFriend, I do you no wrong.  Did you not agree with me for a penny?

Matt. 20:14 Take what is yours, and go your way. I will give to this last, even the same as I give to you.

Matt. 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?Ó

Matt. 20:16 1So the last will be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen.Ó

1Romans 11:11-25 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid, but rather through their fall, salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. Now if their fall be riches for the world, and their failure be the riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my office, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh, and might save some of them. For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what will the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and became partakers with them of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you boast, you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, ÓThe branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.Ó Well, because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear: For if God did not spare the natural branches, take heed lest He also may not spare you either. Therefore behold the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity, but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you will also be cut off. And they also, if they do not abide in unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? For I do not want you, brethren, to be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits, that partial blindness has happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
