Matt. 1:1 The book of the 1generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

(Note: For the 1Genealogy of Jesus, verses 1-17, their references, and parallel, please go to the Appendix in the back of this book)

Christ Is Born

Matt. 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was 1betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the 2Holy Spirit.

1Deuteronomy 22:23,24 If a damsel who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she did not cry out in the city; and the man, because he humbled his neighbor's wife; so you shall put away evil from among you.

21 John 5:7  For there are three who bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

Matt. 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a 1just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to 2put her away secretly.

1Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.

2Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man has taken a wife and marries her, and it come to pass that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house.

2Leviticus 20:10 And the man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Matt. 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a 1dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, fear not to take to you Mary your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.”

1Genesis 20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are but a dead man, for the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.”

1Genesis 31:10,11 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted. And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, “Jacob.” And I said, “Here am I.”

1Genesis 31:24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, “Take heed that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad.”

1Job 4:13-15 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.

Matt. 1:21 And she shall 1bring forth a Son, and you will call His name JESUS: 2for He will save His people from their 3sins.

1Luke 1:31 And, behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.

2John 10:16  "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one fold and one shepherd.”

2Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

3Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, that He will not hear.

3Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matt. 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the 1prophet, saying,

1Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

1John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

Matt. 1:23  Behold, a 1virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a 2Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, 3“God with us.”

1Luke 1:34 Then said Mary to the angel, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"

2Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.

3John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

3John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Matt. 1:24 Then 1Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took to him his wife,

1Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,

Matt. 1:25   and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn 1Son: and he called His name JESUS.

1Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a Son, and you will call His name JESUS: for He will save His people from their sins.

1Matthew 13:55,56 “ Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And His sisters are they not all with us? Where then has this Man received all these things?"

CHAPTER 3

John Prepares The Way

Parallel: Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-6

Matt. 3:1 1In those days came 2John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

1Luke 3:23 And Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,

2Luke 1:57.58 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her; and they rejoiced with her.

2Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Matt. 3:2  and saying, 1“Repent you:  for the 2kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

1Matthew 21:29 He answered and said, “I will not:,” but afterward he repented, and went.

1Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

1Acts 3:19 Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, in order that the times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

2Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

2Mark 9:1 And He said to them, “Verily I say to you, that there are some who stand here, who will not taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God come with power.

Matt. 3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare you the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”

Matt. 3:4 And the same John had his 1clothing of camel’s hair, and a leather girdle about his loins; and his food was 2locusts and wild honey.

12 Kings 1:8 And they answered him, “He was a hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.”  And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

1Zechariah 13:4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision, when he has prophesied; neither will they wear a coarse garment to deceive.

2Leviticus 11:22 Even these you may eat: the locust after its kind, the bald locust after its kind, the beetle after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.

Matt. 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,

Matt. 3:6 and were 1baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

11 Peter 3:21 The like figure even baptism does also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Matt. 3:7   But when he saw many of the Pharisees and 1Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “O generation of 2vipers, who has warned you to flee from the 3wrath to come?

1Acts 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

1Luke 20:27 Then came to Him certain of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection; and they asked Him,

2Acts 28:3-6 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging on his hand, they said among themselves, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live.”  But he shook off the creature into the fire, and felt no harm. However they were expecting that he would swell up, or suddenly fall down dead; but after they had waited a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

3Galatians 6:7,8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows, that he also will reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Matt. 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy for 1repentance:

12 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, not to be repented of, but the sorrow of the world works death.

1Matthew 21:29 He answered and said, “I will not,” but afterward he repented, and went.

1Matthew 25:41 Then will He say also to those on the left hand, “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matt. 3:11 I indeed 1baptize you with water unto repentance: but 2He who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He will baptize you with the 3Holy Spirit, and with 4fire:

1Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

1Luke 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

3Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

31 John 5:7 For there are three who bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

1Luke 3:17  “Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and will gather the wheat into His garner; but the chaff He will burn with fire unquenchable.”

2Matthew 5:22 But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment, and whoever shall say to his brother, “Raca,” will be in danger of the council, but whoever will say, “You fool,” will be in danger of hell fire.

2Matthew 7:19 Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

2Matthew 25:41 Then will He say also to those on His left hand, “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

Matt. 3:13 Then comes Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to John, to be 1baptized of him.

1John 15:10  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, even as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love.

Matt. 3:16 And Jesus, when He was 1baptized, went up immediately out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the 2Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him:

Temptations of Jesus

Matt. 4:1 Then Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the 1devil.

1John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own for he is a liar, and the father of it.

1Ephesians 2:2 which in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience,

1Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

12 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

1Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not keep their first estate, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

Matt. 4:2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry.

Galilean Ministry of Jesus Begins

Parallel: Mark 1:14,15; Luke 4:14,15

Matt. 4:12  Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into 1prison, He departed to Galilee;

1Mark 6:17   For Herod himself had sent and laid hold on John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.

Matt. 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, 1He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali:

1Matthew 9:23-25 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, He said to them, “Give place, for the maid is not dead, but sleeps.”  And they laughed Him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, He went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

Matt. 4:14   That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

Matt. 4:15 The land of 1Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

1Isaiah 9:1,2 Nevertheless the dimness will not be upon her who is distressed, as when at the first He lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; they who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

Matt. 4:16   The people who sat in darkness saw great 1light; and to those who sat in the  region  and shadow of 2death  light is sprung up.

1John 8:12 Then spoke Jesus again to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

2Mark 9:1 And He said to them, “Verily I say to you, that there are some who stand here, who will not taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

Matt. 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw 1two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting  a net into the sea: for they were fishermen.

1John 1:40-42 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” which is, interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jona. You will be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.”

1Mark 10:29,30 And Jesus answered and said, “Verily I say to you, there is no man who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake, and the gospel's, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions—and in the world to come eternal life.”

Matt. 4:23   And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the 1kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

1Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Matt. 4:24  And His fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought to Him all 1sick people who were taken with various diseases and torments, and those who were possessed with demons, and those who were lunatic, and those who had the palsy; and He healed them.

1Matthew 17:15  “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is lunatic, and suffers greatly. For he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.”

1Matthew 9:2 And, behold, they brought to Him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed, and Jesus seeing their faith said to the sick of the palsy, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins be forgiven you.”

Matt. 4:25 And there followed Him great multitudes of people from 1Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan.

1Mark 3:7 But Jesus withdrew Himself with His disciples to the sea and a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea,

Believers As Salt

Parallel: Mark 9:45,50; Luke 14:34,35

Matt. 5:13 You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted.  It is no longer good for anything, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Believers As Light

Parallel:  Mark 4:21-25; Luke 8:16-18; 11:33

Matt. 5:14   You are the 1light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be 2hidden.

Christ Came to Fulfills the Law

Parallel:  Luke 16:14-18

Matt. 5:17 Think not that I have come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I have not come to destroy, but to 1fulfill.

1Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Matt. 5:18 For verily I say to you, until heaven and earth pass, away, one jot or one tittle will in no wise pass  from the law, until all be 1fulfilled.

1Galatians 3:24,25 Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith has come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Matt. 5:19   Whoever therefore will 1break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever shall 2do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the 3kingdom of heaven.

1Matthew 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the other undone.

2James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

3Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Matt. 5:20 For I say to you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Murder In the Heart

Parallel:  None

Matt. 5:21   You have heard that it was said by those of old times, you shall not 1kill; and whoever shall kill will be in danger of the 2judgment,

1Exodus 20:13 You shall not kill.

1Deuteronomy 5:17 You shall not kill.

2Deuteronomy 16:18 Judges and officers you shall make in all your gates, which the LORD your God gives you, throughout your tribes, and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

Matt. 5:22 But I say to you, that whoever is 1angry  with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment, and whoever will say to his brother, “Raca,” will be in danger of the council, but whoever will say, “You fool,” will be in danger of 2hell fire.

1Mark 3:5 And when He had looked round on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch forth your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other.

1Ephesians 4:26  “Be angry, and do not sin;” do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

2Matthew 23:33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you  escape the condemnation of hell?

2Mark 9:43 And if your hand offend you, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—

Matt. 5:23   Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has 1something against you,

1Mark 11:25,26 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses, but if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Matt. 5:24 leave there your gift before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Getting Along With Adversary

Parallel:  Luke 12:57-59

Matt. 5:25 1Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary delivers you to the judge, and the judge delivers you to the officer, and you are cast into prison.

1Luke 12:58 When you go with your adversary to appear before the magistrate, as you are on the way, give diligence that you may settle with him; lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer cast you into prison.

Matt. 5:26 Verily I say to you, you will by no means come out of there, till you have paid the uttermost farthing.

Adultery In the Heart

Parallel:  None

Matt. 5:27 You have heard that it was said by those of old time, you shall not commit 1adultery.

1Exodus 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

1Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Matt. 5:28 But I say to you, that whoever looks on a woman to 1lust after her has committed 2adultery with her already in his heart.

11 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1James 1:14 But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.

2Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

2Exodus 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

Matt. 5:29 And if your right eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you; for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be 1cast into hell.

1Mark 9:43 And if your hand offend you, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than having two hands to go to hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched—

Matt. 5:30 And if your right hand offend you, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into 1hell.

1Matthew 23:33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the condemnation of hell?

Laws For Marriage

Parallel:  Mark 10:1-12; Luke 16:18

Matt. 5:31 It has been said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of 1divorcement.’

1Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man has taken a wife and married her, and it come to pass that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a bill of divorcement, and puts it in her hand, and send her out of his house, and when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife, and if the latter husband hates her and writes her a bill of divorcement, and puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after that she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not cause the land to sin, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance.

1Matthew 19:8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

Matt. 5:32 But I say to you, that whoever shall 1put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever will marry her who is divorced commits adultery.

1Romans 7:1-3 Do you not know, brethren, (for I speak to those who know the law,) how that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives, but if the husband is dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she is married to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she marries another man.

1Matthew 19:3-9 The Pharisees also came to Him, tempting Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read, that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, for this cause a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” They say to Him, “Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?”  He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever will put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is put away commits adultery.”

11 Corinthians 7:10-16  And to the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord: Let not the wife depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband, and let not the husband put away his wife. But to the rest I say, not the Lord: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman who has a husband who does not believe, and if he is pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. But if the unbelieving departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

11 Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.
