CHAPTER 6
Doing
Good To Please God
Parallel: None
Matt. 6:1 Take heed that you do not your 1alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise you have no reward of your Father who is in heaven.
1Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said to
the Lord, “Behold, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have
taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”
Matt. 6:2 Therefore when
you give your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in
the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say to you, they have their
reward.
Matt. 6:3 But when you
give alms, let
not your left hand know what your right hand does,
Matt. 6:4 that your alms may be in secret:
and your Father who 1sees
in secret Himself
will reward you openly.
1Psalms 139:7-12 Where shall I go from Your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, You are
there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of
the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there shall Your
hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness
shall cover me.” Even the night shall be light about me.” Indeed, the darkness
does not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the
light are both alike to You.
Jesus Gives a Model
Prayer
Parallel: Luke 11:1-4
Matt. 6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they
love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen
of men. Verily I
say to you, they have
their reward.
Matt. 6:6 But you, when
you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in
secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Matt. 6:7 But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they
will be heard for their much speaking.
Matt. 6:8 Be not you therefore like them: for your Father 1knows what things you have need
of, before you ask Him.
1Romans 8:26,27 Likewise the Spirit also helps
our infirmities. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but
the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered. And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is,
because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Matt. 6:9 After this
manner therefore pray you: ‘Our Father who are in heaven, 1Hallowed be Your name.
1Exodus 20:7 You shall not take the name of the
LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His
name in vain.
Matt. 6:10 Your 1kingdom come Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
1Colossians 1:13 Who has delivered us from the power
of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son,
1Matthew 3:2 And saying, “Repent you: for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
1Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to
preach, and to say, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
1Matthew 10:7 And as you go, preach, saying, “The
kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
1Matthew 7:21 Not every one who says to Me,
“Lord, Lord,” shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will
of My Father who is in heaven.
1Matthew 16:19 And I will give to you the keys of
the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven:
and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Matt. 6:11 Give us this day our daily 1bread.
1Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say to you, take no
thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for
your body, what you will put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body
than clothing?
Matt. 6:12 And 1forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
1Luke 11:4 “And forgive us our sins, for
we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into
temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
1Mark 11:25,26 And when you stand praying,
forgive, if you have anything against anyone, that your Father who is in heaven
may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will
your Father who is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
1Matthew 18:23-35 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is
like a certain king, who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when
he had begun settlement, one was brought to him, who owed him ten thousand
talents. But since he was not able
to pay, his lord commanded that he and his wife and children, and all that he had be
sold, and that payment be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshiped
him, saying, “Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.” Then the
lord of that servant was moved with compassion, loosed him, and forgave the
debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who
owed him a hundred pence, and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat,
saying, “Pay me what you owe!” And his fellow servant fell down at his feet,
and besought him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.” And
he would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay the debt.
So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came
and told their lord all that had been done. Then his lord, after that he had
called him, said to him, ”O wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because
you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant,
even as I had pity on you?” And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the
tormentors, until he should pay all that was due to him. So likewise will My
heavenly Father also do to you, if you, from your hearts, do not forgive your
brother’s trespasses.”
1Luke 7:41-43 There was a certain creditor who
had two debtors: one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when
they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell Me therefore, which
of them will love him most?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one to
whom he forgave most.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”
Matt. 6:13 And lead us not into 1temptation, but deliver us from evil: For
Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
1James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted,
“I am tempted of God;” for God cannot be tempted by evil, neither does He tempt
anyone.
1Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that you do
not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak.”
11 Corinthians 10:13 There has no temptation taken you
except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to
be tempted above that you are able; but with the temptation will also make a
way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Matt. 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you.
Matt. 6:15 But if you 1forgive not men their trespasses,
neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
1Mark 11:25,26 And whenever you stand praying,
forgive, if you have anything against anyone, that your Father also who is in
heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will
your Father who is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Fasting Should Be Seen
of God
Parallel: None
Matt. 6:16 Moreover, when
you fast, be
not, as the
hypocrites, of a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men
to be fasting. Verily I say to you, they have their
reward.
Matt. 6:17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your
face;
Matt. 6:18 that you appear not to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in
secret: and your
Father, who sees in secret, will 1reward you openly.
1Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with
death. And all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and
hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your works.
Treasures In Heaven
Parallel: None
Matt. 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust does
corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal;
Matt. 6:20 but lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves
do not break through nor steal.
Matt. 6:21 For where your 1treasure is, there will your heart be also.
1Matthew 19:21,22 Jesus said to him, “If you will be
perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have
treasure in heaven, and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that
saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
The Light of the Body
Parallel: Luke 11:33-36
Matt. 6:22 The light of the body is the eye. If
therefore your eye be
single, your
whole body will be full of 1light.
1John 8:12 Then spoke Jesus again to them,
saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Matt. 6:23 But if your eye be evil, your whole body will be full of 1darkness. If therefore the light that is
in you be darkness, how great is that darkness!
1Colossians 1:13 Who has delivered us from the power
of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son,
Cannot Serve Two
Masters
Parallel: Luke 16:13
Matt. 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will
hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise
the other. You
cannot serve God and 1riches.
11 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root
of all kinds of evil, and some who have coveted after it, have erred from the
faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1Matthew 13:22 He also who received seed among the
thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
It Is Wrong To Worry
Parallel: Luke 12:22-34
Matt. 6:25 Therefore I
say to you, take no thought for your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink;
nor yet for your body, what you will put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than clothing?
Matt. 6:26 Behold the birds of the air, for they
sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father
feeds them. Are you not much better than they?
Matt. 6:27 Which of you by
taking thought can
add one cubit to his stature?
Matt. 6:28 And why take
you thought for clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they
toil not, neither do they spin:
Matt. 6:29 And yet I say to you, that even Solomon in all his
glory was not arrayed
like one of these.
Matt. 6:30 Therefore, if
God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven,
will He not much more 1clothe
you? O you of little faith?
1Genesis 1:26 And God said, “Let Us make man in
Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the
sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and
over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
1Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work
together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according
to His purpose.
Matt. 6:31 Therefore take
no thought, saying, “What will we eat, or what will
we drink, or with what shall we be clothed?’
Matt. 6:32 for after all
these things do
the Gentiles seek:
for your heavenly 1Father
knows that you have need of all these things.
11 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him, for
He cares for you.
Matt. 6:33 But seek you first the 1kingdom of God, and His
righteousness; and
all these things will
be added to you.
1Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are
Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will
not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever
you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Matt. 6:34 Take therefore
no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take thought for
the things of itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil of it.
Judge Not
Parallel: Luke 6:37-42
Matt. 7:1 1Judge not, that you be not judged,
1Romans
14:3 Let not
him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat
judge him who eats; for God has received him.
1Romans 2:1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O
man, whoever you are who judge, for in that you judge another you condemn
yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.
Matt. 7:2 for with what
judgment you judge, you will be 1judged: and with
what measure you mete, it will be 2measured to you again.
1James 2:13 For judgment is without mercy, to
the one who has shown no mercy; and mercy rejoices over judgment.
2Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you;
good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, will men
give to your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured
to you again.
Matt. 7:3 And why behold the mote that is in your brother’s eye,
but do not consider
the beam that
is in your own eye?
Matt. 7:4 Or how will you say to your brother, let me pull out the mote out of your eye, and, behold, a
beam is in your own eye?
Matt. 7:5 You 1hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of your own eye; and then
will you see clearly to cast out the mote out of your brother’s eye.
12 Peter 2:1,2 But there were also false prophets
among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will
secretly bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and
will bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their
pernicious ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
Matt. 7:6 Give not that
which is holy to
the dogs, neither cast your 1pearls before
swine, lest they trample them under their feet,
and turn again and rend you.
1Matthew 13:45,46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is
like a merchant, seeking goodly pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of
great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Ask, Seek, and Knock
Parallel: Luke 11:9-13
Matt. 7:7 1Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and
you will find; 2knock, and it will be opened to you.
1Luke 18:1-8 And He spoke a parable to them to
show that men ought always to pray, and not to faint saying, “There was in a
city a judge, who did not fear God, nor regard man. And there was a widow in
that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Avenge me of my adversary.’ And for a
while he would not, but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear
God, nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she
weary me.’ And the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall not
God avenge His own elect, who cry day and night to Him, though He bears long
with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the
Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
2Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears My voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him and will
dine with him, and he with Me.
Matt. 7:8 For everyone who 1asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks it
will be opened.
11 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we
have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
1Mark 11:24 Therefore I say to you, whatever
things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have
them.
1James 1:6,7 But let him ask in faith, nothing
doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and
tossed. For let not that man think that he will receive anything from the
Lord.
Matt. 7:9 Or what man is there of you, if his son asks for bread, will
he give him a stone?
Matt. 7:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?
Matt. 7:11 If you then,
being 1evil, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven 2give good things to those who ask
Him?
1Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short
of the glory of God,
2Romans 8:32 He who spared not His own Son, but
delivered Him up for us all, how will He not with Him freely give us all
things?
2Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how
to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?
2James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect
gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no
variableness, nor shadow of turning.
The Golden Rule
Parallel: Luke 6:31
Matt. 7:12 Therefore all
things whatever
you would that
men should 1do
to you, do you
even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
1James 2:8 If you fulfill the royal law
according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do
well;
1Romans 13:9 For this, “You shall not commit
adultery,” “You shall not kill,”
“You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,”
“You shall not covet;” and if
there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying,
namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The Narrow and Broad
Ways
Parallel: Luke 13:24-30
Matt. 7:13 1Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to 2destruction, and many there are who go in
thereat.
1Hebrews
5:9 And having
been made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation to all those who
obey Him,
2Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
2Galatians 6:7,8 Be not deceived, God is not mocked:
for whatever a man sows, that he also will reap. For he who sows to his flesh
will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the
Spirit reap life everlasting.
Matt. 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to 1life, and few there are who find it.
1John 10:10 The thief comes not except to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I have come that they may have life, and that
they may have it more abundantly.
1John 14:6 Jesus said to him,” I am the way,
the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me.”
Know Them by Their
Fruits
Parallel: Matthew 12:33-37; Luke 6:43-45
Matt. 7:15 Beware of 1false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they
are ravenous wolves.
1Acts 20:29 For I know this, which after
my departing savage wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Matt. 7:16 You will know
them by their
fruits. Do men
gather grapes of thorns, or 1figs of thistles?
1Mark 11:12-14 And on the morrow, when they had
come from Bethany, He was hungry: And seeing afar off a fig tree having leaves,
He went to see if perhaps He could find anything on it. And when He came to it, He found
nothing but leaves, for it was not the time for figs. And Jesus answered and
said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard it.
Matt. 7:17 Even so every good 1tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.
1Psalms 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted
by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season. Its leaf
also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.
Matt. 7:18 A good 1tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
1Matthew 12:33 Either make the tree good, and its
fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree
is known by its fruit.
Matt. 7:19 Every tree that brings not forth 1good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
1John 15:1-8 I am the true vine, and My Father
is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;
and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit.
Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and
I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the
vine, no more can you, except you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the
branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit;
for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone abides not in Me, he is cast forth
as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and throw them into the
fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you
will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is
glorified, that you bear much fruit; so shall you be My disciples.
Matt. 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits you will know them.
I Never Knew You
Parallel: None
Matt. 7:21 Not every one
who says to me, 1‘Lord,
Lord,’ will
enter into the 2kingdom
of heaven; but he who 3does
the will of my Father.
1Luke 6:46 And why call you Me, “Lord, Lord,”
and do not the things which I say?”
2Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are
Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will
not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever
you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
2Colossians 1:13 Who has delivered us from the power
of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son,
21 Corinthians 15:24-26 Then comes the end, when He
delivers up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when He shall have put down
all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign, until He has put all
enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
3James
1:22-25 But be
doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if
anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his
natural face in a mirror: for he beholds himself, and goes his way, and
immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect
law of liberty and continues in it, he being not a forgetful hearer but a doer
of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Matt. 7:22 Many will say
to Me in that 1day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in Your name, and in Your name have cast out devils, and in Your
name done many wonderful works?’
1Matthew 25:31-32 When the Son of man shall come in
His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then will He sit on the throne of
His glory: And before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate
them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats:
1Acts 17:31 Because He has appointed a day, in
the which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has
ordained. He has given assurance to all men, in that He has raised Him from the
dead.
Matt. 7:23 And then will I
profess to them,
I never knew you: depart from Me, you who work iniquity.
Rock and Sand Builders
Parallel: Luke 6:46-49
Matt. 7:24 Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his
house upon a rock.
Matt. 7:25 And the rain descended, and the
floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it
was founded upon a rock.
Matt. 7:26 And everyone
who hears these sayings of mine, and 1does them not, will be likened to a foolish man, who built his house
upon the sand.
1Matthew 7:21 Not every one who says to Me,
“Lord, Lord,” will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will
of My Father who is in heaven.
Matt. 7:27 And the rain
descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it
fell. And great was the fall of it.”
Matt. 7:28 And it came to
pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine,
Matt. 7:29 for He taught them as one having
1authority, and not as the scribes.
1Mark 11:27,28 And they came again to Jerusalem.
And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and
the elders, came to Him. And they said to Him, “By what authority are You doing
these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”
1John 8:18 I am One who bears witness of
Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.
A Man With Leprosy
Parallel: Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16
Matt. 8:1 When He had come
down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.
Matt. 8:2 And, behold,
there came a 1leper
and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You will, You can make me clean.”
1Leviticus 13:1-13 And the LORD spoke to Moses and
Aaron, saying, “When a man has on the skin of his flesh a swelling, a scab, or
bright spot, and it is on the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy,
then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests.
And the priest shall look at the plague on the skin of the flesh; and if the
hair on the plague has turned white, and the plague looks to be deeper than the
skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy. And the priest shall look on him,
and pronounce him unclean. If the bright spot is white on the skin of his
flesh, and does not look to be deeper than the skin, and the hair on it has not
turned white, then the priest shall isolate the one who has the plague seven days.
And the priest shall look at him on the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague
looks to be as it was, and the plague has not spread on the skin, then the
priest shall isolate him another seven days. And the priest shall look at him
again the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague is somewhat dark, and the
plague has not spread on the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is
only a scab, and he shall wash his clothes and be clean. But if the scab should
spread much abroad on the skin, after he has been seen by the priest for his
cleansing, he shall be seen by the priest again. And if the priest sees that,
behold, the scab spreads on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him
unclean. It is leprosy. When the plague of leprosy is on a man, then he shall
be brought to the priest. And the priest shall look at him; and, behold, if the
swelling is white on the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and there is a
spot of raw flesh in the swelling, it is an old leprosy on the skin of his
flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean, and shall not isolate him,
for he is unclean. And if the leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the
leprosy covers all of his skin of him who has the plague from his head even to
his foot, wherever the priest looks, then the priest shall consider; and,
behold, if the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean
who has the plague. It has all turned white. He is clean.
Matt. 8:3 And Jesus put forth His hand, and
touched him, saying,
“I will; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Matt. 8:4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you
tell no man; but
go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses 1commanded, for a testimony to
them.
1Leviticus 14:10 And on the eighth day he shall take
two male lambs without blemish, one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish,
and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with
oil, and one log of oil.
1Leviticus 14:22 And two turtledoves, or two young
pigeons, such as he is able to get; and the one shall be a sin offering, and
the other a burnt offering.
1Leviticus 14:30,31 And he shall offer one of the
turtledoves or of the young pigeons, such as he can get—even such as he is able
to get, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, with
the meat offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him who is to be
cleansed before the LORD.
Centurion’s Servant
Healed
Parallel: Luke 7:1-10
Matt. 8:5 And when Jesus had entered into 1Capernaum, there came to Him a 2Centurion, beseeching Him,
1Luke 7:1-3 Now when He had ended all His
sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum. And a certain
Centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was sick, and ready to die. And when
he heard of Jesus, he sent to Him the elders of the Jews, beseeching Him that
he would come and heal his servant.
2John 4:46-54 So Jesus came again to Cana of
Galilee, where He made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose
son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea to
Galilee, he went to Him, and besought Him to come down, and heal his son, for
he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus to him, “Except you see signs and
wonders, you will not believe.” The nobleman said to him, ” Sir, come down
before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” And
the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. And as
he was going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, “Your son
lives.” Then he inquired of them the hour when he had gotten better. And they
said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father
knew that it was at the same hour, which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives,”
and he himself believed, and his whole household. This again is the second
miracle that Jesus did, when He had come out of Judea to Galilee.
2Acts 10:1 There was a certain man in Caesarea
called Cornelius, a Centurion of what was called the Italian cohort,
Matt. 8:6 and saying, “Lord, my servant lies at home sick of the
palsy, grievously 1tormented.”
1Matthew 4:24 And His fame went throughout all
Syria: and they brought to Him all sick people who were taken with various
diseases and torments, and those who were possessed with devils, and those who
were lunatic, and those who had the palsy; and He healed them.
Matt. 8:7 and Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
Matt. 8:8 The Centurion answered and said, “Lord,
I am not worthy that You should come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant will be healed.
Matt. 8:9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I
say to this man, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and
to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
Matt. 8:10 When Jesus heard it, He 1marveled, and said to those who followed,
“Verily I say to
you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
1Mark 6:6 And he marveled because of their
unbelief. And He went about the villages, teaching.
Matt. 8:11 And I say to you, that 1many will come from the east and
west, and will
sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the 2kingdom of heaven.
1Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and
said, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.”
21 Corinthians 15:24,25 Then comes the end, when He
delivers up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when He shall have put down
all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign, until He has put all
enemies under His feet.
Matt. 8:12 But the children of the 1kingdom will be cast out into outer 2darkness: there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.”
1Matthew 13:41,42 The Son of Man shall send forth His
angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and
those who do iniquity, and will cast them into a furnace of fire. There will be
wailing and gnashing of teeth.
2Matthew 25:30 And cast the unprofitable servant
into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
2Matthew 23:33 You serpents, you generation of
vipers, how can you escape the condemnation of hell?
2Mark 9:43 And if your hand offend you, cut it
off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than having two hands to go to
hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—
Matt. 8:13 And Jesus said to the Centurion, “Go
your way, and as you have believed, so be it done for you.” And his servant was healed in the same hour.
Jesus Healed Peter’s Mother-in-Law
Parallel: Mark 1:29-31; Luke 4:38,39
Matt. 8:14 And when Jesus had come into 1Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother lying, and sick with a fever.

out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with
James and John.
1Luke 4:38 And He arose out of the synagogue,
and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a
great fever; and they besought Him for her.
Matt. 8:15 And He touched her 1hand, and the fever left her: and she
arose, and ministered to them.
1Mark 1:31 And He came and took her by the
hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered
to them.

Sabbath

set, they brought to Him all who were diseased, and those who were possessed
with devils.
Matt.
8:17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by 1Isaiah the prophet, saying, “He Himself took our 2infirmities, and bore our
sicknesses.”
1Isaiah 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried
our sorrows: yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
21 Peter 2:24 Who Himself bore our sins in His
own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, might live to
righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
The Cost of Following
Jesus
Parallel: Luke 9:57-62
Matt. 8:18 Now when Jesus
saw great multitudes about Him, He gave commandment to depart to the other
side.
Matt. 8:19 And a certain
scribe came, and
said to Him, “Master,
1I will follow You wherever You
go”
1Acts 9:6 And he, trembling and astonished,
said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” And the Lord said to him, “Arise, and
go into the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.”
Matt. 8:20 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have
holes, and the
birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
Matt. 8:21 And another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, allow me
first to go and
bury my father.”
Matt. 8:22 But Jesus said to him, 1“Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead.
1Luke 9:61,62 And another also said, “Lord, I
will follow You, but let me first go bid them farewell, who are at home at my
house.” And Jesus said to him, “No man, having put his hand to the plow, and
looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Calms the Storm
Parallel: Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25
Matt. 8:23 And when He had entered into a boat, His disciples followed Him.
Matt. 8:24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, so much that the 1boat was 2covered with the waves, but He
was asleep.
1Matthew 14:24 But the boat was now in the middle
of the sea, tossed with waves, for the wind was contrary.
2Mark 4:37 And there arose a great storm of
wind, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was now full.
Matt. 8:25 And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We perish!”
Matt. 8:26 And He said to them, “Why are you
fearful, O you
of little faith?” Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there
was a great calm.
Matt. 8:27 But
the men marveled, saying, “What manner of man is
this, that even
the winds and the sea obey Him!”
Two Demon-Possessed
Healed
Parallel: Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39
Matt. 8:28 And when He had come to the other side into the country of the 1Gergesenes, there met Him two 2possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce,
so that no man might
pass by that way.
1Mark 5:1 And they came over to the other
side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of
the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean

there met Him out of the city a certain man, who had devils for a long time,
and wore no clothes, neither lived in any house, but in the tombs.

You, Jesus, 1You
Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”
1Mark 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he
ran and worshiped Him,
1James 2:19 You believe that there is one God;
you do well; the devils also believe, and tremble.
Matt. 8:30 And there was, a good way off from
them, a herd of many swine feeding.
Matt. 8:31 So the devils besought Him, saying, “If You cast us out, suffer us
to go away into the herd of swine.”
Matt. 8:32 And He said to them, 1“Go!” And when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine, and, behold, the whole herd of
swine ran
violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.
1Mark 5:13 And forthwith Jesus gave them
leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine, and the
herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two
thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
Matt. 8:33 And those who kept them fled, and went their way into
the city, and told everything, and what had happened to the possessed of the
devils.
Matt. 8:34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when
they saw Him, they besought Him that He would depart out of their coasts.
A Paralytic Healed and
Forgiven
Parallel: Mark 2:1-12;
Luke 5:17-26
Matt. 9:1 And He entered into a boat, and passed over, and came to His 1own city.

said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
2Luke 7:48 And He said to her, “Your sins are
forgiven.”
Matt. 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, “This man
blasphemes.”
Matt. 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Wherefore think you evil in your
hearts?
Matt. 9:5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins
be forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, and walk?’
Matt. 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of man has power on
earth to forgive sins—then said He to the sick of the palsy, “Arise, take up
your bed, and go
to your house.”
Matt. 9:7 And he arose, and departed to his house.
Matt. 9:8 But when the multitude saw it, they 1marveled, and glorified God, who had given
such power to
men.
1Luke 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they
glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things
to day.”

meat in the
house, behold, many 1publicans and sinners came and sat down with Him and
His disciples.
1Mark 2:15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus
sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with
Jesus and His disciples: for there were many, and they followed Him.
1Luke 5:29 And Levi made Him a great feast in
his own house. And there was a great company of publicans and of others who sat
down with them.
Matt. 9:11 And when the
Pharisees saw
it, they said to
His disciples, “Why does your Master eat with
publicans and sinners?”
Matt. 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, He said to
them, “Those who are whole need not a physician, but those who are sick.
Matt. 9:13 But go you and learn what this means, ‘I will have 1mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
1Hosea 6:6 For I desired mercy and not
sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Questions About Fasting
Parallel: Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39
Matt. 9:14 Then came to Him the disciples of John, saying, “Why do we and the
Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples fast not?”

said to them, “Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is
with them? But the days will 1come, when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and
then will they fast.
1John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled; you
believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if
it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if
I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself;
that where I am, there you may be also.
Matt. 9:16 No man
puts a piece of new
cloth on an old garment, for that which is put on to fill it up takes from
the garment, and the rent is made worse.
Matt. 9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the
bottles break, and the wine runs out, and the bottles perish, but they put new wine
into new bottles, and
both are
preserved.”

Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus' feet,
and besought Him that He would come to his house:
1Mark 5:23 And besought Him greatly, saying,
“My little daughter lies at the point of death. I pray You, come and lay Your

with an 1issue of
blood twelve
years, came
behind Him, and touched the hem of His garment:
1Mark 5:26 And had suffered many things of
many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather
grew worse,
Matt. 9:21 For she said within herself, “If I may
but touch His garment, I will be whole.”
Matt. 9:22 But Jesus
turned Himself about,
and when He saw her, He said, “Daughter, be of good comfort; your 1faith has made you whole.” And the
woman was made 2whole from that hour.
1Luke 8:47 And when the woman saw that she was
not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to
Him before all the people the reason she had touched Him, and how she was
healed immediately.
2Mark 5:29 And immediately the fountain of her

allowed no one to go in, except Peter, James, and John, and the father and the
mother of the girl.
Matt. 9:24 He said to them, “Give place, for the maid is not dead, but

be it to you.”
Matt. 9:30 And their eyes were opened, and Jesus strictly charged them,
saying, “See that no man knows it.”

that country.
Jesus Heals a Mute Man
Parallel: Mark 7:31-37; Luke 11:14,15
Matt. 9:32 As
they went out,
behold, they brought
to Him a dumb man possessed with a devil.
Matt. 9:33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes
marveled, saying, “It was never seen in Israel.”
Matt. 9:34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out 1devils through the prince of the
devils.”
1Matthew 12:22-30 Then was brought to Him one
possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb, and He healed him, so that the blind
and dumb both spoke and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, “Is not
this the son of David?” But when
the Pharisees heard it, they said, “This fellow does not cast out devils, but
by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.” And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them,
“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city
or house divided against itself will not stand. And if Satan casts out Satan,
he is divided against himself. How
then will his kingdom stand? And if I, by Beelzebub, cast out devils, by whom
do your children cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if I
cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods,
except he first bind the strong man?
And then he will spoil his house. He who is not with Me is against Me,
and he who gathers not with Me scatters abroad.”
The
Harvest is Plentiful

not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever
you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Matt. 9:36 But when He saw the 1multitudes, He was moved with compassion on
them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their
sick.

laborers are
few.
Matt. 9:38 1Pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will 2send forth laborers into His
harvest.”
12 Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brethren, pray for
us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, just as
it is with you,

them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all
manner of disease.
1Luke 9:1 Then he called His twelve disciples
together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure
diseases.
Matt. 10:2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, 1Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; 2James
the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
1John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And
when Jesus beheld him, he said, “You are Simon the son of Jona. You will be
called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.”
2Matthew 27:56 Among who were Mary Magdalene, and
Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
2Mark 15:40 There were also women looking on
from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the
less and of Joses, and Salome,
2Mark 16:1 And when the Sabbath was past, Mary
Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices that
they might come and anoint Him.
Matt. 10:3 Philip, and Bartholomew; 1Thomas, and 2Matthew the
publican; 3James the
son of Alphaeus, and
4Lebbaeus, whose surname was 5Thaddaeus;
1John 11:16 Then Thomas, who is called Didymus,
said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
2Mark 2:14 And as He passed by, He saw Levi
the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, “Follow
Me.” And he arose and followed him.
2Luke 5:27 And after these things He went
forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom and He
said to him, “Follow Me.”
3Matthew 27:56 Among who were Mary Magdalene, and
Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
3Mark 15:40 There were also women looking on
from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the
less and of Joses, and Salome,
4Luke 6:16 And Judas the brother of James, and
Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor.
5Acts 1:13 And when they had come in, they
went up into the upper room, where they were staying: Peter, and James, and
John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son
of Alphaeus, and Simon Zealot; and Judas the brother of James.
Matt. 10:4 1Simon
the Canaanite, and
2Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed
Him.
1Luke 6:15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son
of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zealot,
2John 12:6 This he said, not that he cared for
the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put
therein.
2John 13:29 For some of them thought, because
Judas had the money bag, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things that we
need for the feast,” or, that he should give something to the poor.
2Matthew 27:3-10 Then Judas, who had betrayed Him,
when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the
thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned
in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to
us? You see to that.” And he cast
down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed. Then he went and hanged
himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said; “It is not
lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.” And
they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers
in. Therefore that field has been called, the Field of Blood, to this day. Then
was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took
the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him who was priced, whom they of
the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter's field, as the
Lord appointed me.”
2John 6:71 He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son
of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
